Exploring the challenges of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)

Take, for example, a child who comes in second in a race and is eager to share their achievement but faces criticism instead of praise from their parents.

Such experiences can significantly damage a child’s self-esteem and foster feelings of inadequacy.

I also critique how educational and parenting approaches often exacerbate these issues by emphasising errors over accomplishments. It’s essential to shift towards positive reinforcement, which can dramatically enhance self-confidence and resilience, particularly in children sensitive to rejection.

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria isn’t limited to children; it affects teenagers and adults as well, potentially leading to serious mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm. Recognising the signs and supporting those affected in a nurturing way is crucial.
